Overheating is one of the few faults where continuing to drive can turn a moderate repair into an engine rebuild. If the temperature gauge climbs, stop safely and let the engine cool.
Coolant level and leaks
Low coolant is the most common cause, and it always has a source — a hose, a radiator seam, the water pump or an expansion tank cap that no longer holds pressure.
Cooling fans
Fans matter most in slow traffic, where there is no airflow through the radiator. A car that runs cool on the highway but heats up in traffic is a classic fan or fan-control symptom.
Thermostat and circulation
A thermostat stuck closed prevents coolant reaching the radiator. Blocked passages or a failing water pump reduce circulation in a similar way.
Do not just top it up and continue
Refilling coolant without finding the leak leaves the same failure ahead of you, usually at a less convenient moment. Have the system pressure tested.
