Brakes are the system where postponing an inspection carries the most risk. The good news is that wear almost always announces itself before performance is compromised.
Squealing or grinding
Many pads include a wear indicator designed to squeal when the friction material gets low. A metallic grinding sound is more serious — it usually means the pad material is gone and the disc is being damaged.
Vibration through the pedal or steering
Pulsing under braking generally points to disc thickness variation. It tends to worsen gradually and is most noticeable when slowing from higher speeds.
A soft or sinking pedal
A pedal that travels further than usual, or slowly sinks while you hold pressure, suggests a hydraulic issue. This should be inspected immediately rather than monitored.
Pulling to one side
If the car steers left or right under braking, one side is doing more work than the other — often a sticking caliper or a contaminated pad.
