The check engine light indicates that the engine management system has recorded a fault outside its expected parameters. It does not tell you the severity on its own.
Steady light
A steady light generally means the vehicle can be driven with care to a workshop. Note any change in how the car feels and have it scanned soon.
Flashing light
A flashing light usually indicates a misfire severe enough to risk damage to the catalytic converter. Reduce load and have the vehicle inspected without delay.
Simple causes are worth ruling out
A loose fuel cap can trigger an evaporative system code on many vehicles. It is worth checking before assuming the worst.
Clearing the code is not a repair
Erasing the fault removes the light temporarily and deletes useful data. The fault will return if the underlying cause has not been addressed.
